For the fourth summer, we're teaming up with The Arts Council of Indianapolis to bring you the Artist Professional Development Workshops: Summer Series. Workshops are a free resource to artists and are a valuable tool for sharpening your business skills, promoting your work, and for networking with other professional artists. Mark your calendars for the evenings of July 16, July 30, and August 6th, and watch the Artist E-news in the coming weeks for details on topics and speakers. All workshops are free and open to any area artist. Space is limited, so please RSVP to artistservices@indyarts.org.

Wed. July 16 - Basic Business Practices for Artists

Join us for our first Artist Professional Development Workshop of the summer at the Arts Council of Indianapolis. Located at 20 N. Meridian St., Ste. 500. (Parking available in the Circle Center Mall or on the street on Monument Circle of Meridian St.)

Presenters:

John Long of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and Sharon O’Donoghue of Business Owners Initiative will present a variety of topics helpful for artists starting and running their own business. John Long recently retired from a 35-year career at Thompson and is now working with SCORE. Long has served as the Indianapolis Chapter Chairman and is now the Vice Chairman of Seminars and Workshops. Sharon O'Donoghue was named the executive director of the Business Ownership Initiative (formerly Neighborhood Self-Employment Initiative). O'Donoghue has served as the organization’s interim executive director since October 2007 and was previously the director of the Central Indiana Women’s Business Center, a program of BOI that is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration.


Wed. July 30 – Framing and Presentation

Learn the basics of framing your own work as well as how to build structurally sound stretcher frames. The workshop will be held in the woodshop of Herron School of Art & Design on the IUPUI campus. Attendees will be responsible for paying for or locating parking spaces, however, the workshop is free.

Presenters:

Brian Myers, artist and manager of the Herron woodshop, will speak as well as Sarah Adams, owner of AV Framing and Gallery in Fountain Square.

Wed. August 6 – PR for Artists and Small Arts Organizations

Learn the basics of how to talk to a reporter, what information you need to have ready and available, as well as how to get a writer, magazine editor, TV station or newspaper interested in you and your work. This workshop will be held at the Arts Council of Indianapolis at 20 N. Meridian St., Ste. 500 (SW quad of Monument Circle in the Guaranty building) Parking is available on the street or in the Circle Center Mall garage.

Barbara E. Cohen, freelance arts writer; Jen Thomas, owner of Jen Thomas PR, and others to be announced.
